about

This is the first song I ever wrote, but for the longest time I didn't know how to finish it. After months of frustration, exactly one year ago, I got out of bed at two in the morning and made my way to the roof of our apartment in NYC. I sat with my guitar until the last bits of the melody finally formed. Now, one year later, I’m finally sharing it

“Prom” is a love letter to the summer after high school. To my naivety, to my desire to be wanted, to my inability to break away from what I felt and believed since I was young. I carried the emotions of this song with me all throughout my first couple of years in college, but I was never able to find the right words. Once I finally did, I realized that this is the kind of song I could only write looking back, the kind of song that requires distance and time.

It’s funny to me that everyone knows prom is a night that never quite lives up to our dreams. Finishing this song was my way of closing a chapter in my life even though it’s been years since, and even though it didn’t live up to my dreams.

I can’t tell you how small the world feels when you’re 17.

lyrics

Now and again I think about that night
Stumbled in heels
Wanted to reach your eyes

When I was young I walked away
Before anyone could
Because I was so goddamn sure they would

I watched you dance the whole night

Don’t know why they say this is the best night of your life
Don’t know why they say this is the one time it’ll all feel right

Can’t believe I stayed so long
To drive home alone
While everyone left to race God in the streets

Guess you want what you didn’t get
Growing up
And you pray for a bit knowing love
Isn’t something you really know

I watched you dance the whole night

Don’t know why they say this is the best night of your life
Don’t know why they say this is the one time it’ll all feel right

Can’t tell you how small the world feels when you’re 17

about

Samina New York, New York

I taught myself how to play guitar when I was 15, started writing songs at 18, and now I'm 20 and there are few things I love more than music. I hope my songs stay with you. :)
